Katelyn's Song

by your mother, Katherine L. Harris-Szerdy

I heard you say to your Daddy today
On this, your 21st birthday
That there’s no song written in honor of your name
No sweet romantic love song
Begging you please to come home
Or claiming to whom you belong
Woodwinds tugging at heart strings,
Offering promises and diamond rings,
that you can claim for that pretty name
Daddy and I chose 21 years ago today.
for our cherub-faced baby girl
with satin bows tying back wispy blonde curls.
I checked for titles with girls’ names
On a song lyric dot-com.  You were right--
—no “Katelyn’s Song” has been written.
Of the hundreds of girls’ names, not one is in sight.
The Police wrote a ballad for Roxanne
“Jennifer Juniper,” sang one-hit Donovan
“Susan van Heusen” by Gilbert O’Sullivan
“Mustang Sally” by Eric Clapton
Simon & Garfunkle wrote “Cecilia”
The Beatles penned “Lucille” and “Michelle.”
“Penny Lane” and “Eleanor Rigby”
The Stones rocked for “Ruby Tuesday”
Rod Stewart wrote “Amanda” and “Maggie May”
And swooned for a girl named “Angie.”
Manilow composed one for “Mandy.”
The Monkeys made it big with “Valerie”
Eminem composed one for “Zoe”
Songs for girls’ names from A to Z—
But no one has written Katelyn’s song
Until now.  On your special Birthday
Your twenty-first, now  you can no longer say
That no one has written a song for your name.
Someone who loves you wrote one just for you!
It may not make the Billboard Charts
Or win a Grammy, but at least this one’s a start—
A song written from a mother’s heart
With all the love a lyric can hold.
For her little girl whose all grown up
A beautiful young woman now--take a look and behold
A song for Katelyn, her own “Katelyn’s Song.”
