WE/THEY: Things Are Not Always What They Seem*

By Katherine Szerdy
Who do you think is the other?
You may think You and not They belong to “We”--
Don’t be duped!
The past beguiles us,
Beckoning with long, bony finger
Points down, puts down, oppresses
Divides—you, go here—you, over there
Culture speaks with sultry voice
to our unconscious prejudice
Mesmeric in her appeal.
STOP!  Shake your head, blink three times--
Time to let go of old paradigms
Set them free
Biology proves there is no They
They and You are part of We
The IDEA of They is the enemy
Come take this opportunity
To answer to a higher Authority
By joining hands and hearts in unity
Face the truth—And be free!
